Land’s End to John O’Groats 2021 – Day 2: Penzance to Truro, 53.7k,769m climbed

Today was a glorious day of cycling. Starting before 8 to avoid the heat, I shared the South Coast path from Penzance to Marazion with joggers, dog walkers and wild swimmers returning home invigorated from their morning dip. Heading inland, I parted clouds of swallows gathered on the road, preparing to head south. At 10k and 40k my notebook just says “happy”. And that was despite the inevitable hills.

In Hayle, Philps Pasties was the only place with tables in the sun but they hadn’t got their coffee machine on yet (sorry, what?) and in my book 9.15 is a bit early for a pasty, no matter what the locals say.

In Cambourne, I was pleased to find a café serving coffee – but no oat milk. You can’t have everything.

Lots of evidence of Cornwall’s mining heritage around this area.

And some sign of re-wilding – though not necessarily on purpose.

On a bike, you see things you might otherwise miss speeding by in a car:

And some things just make you laugh out loud:

But best of all is finding old friends waiting for you at your destination…

… who lay on a perfect sundowner and carb-feast for a hungry cyclist – thanks Webbo, Keith and Carrie.
