Land’s End to John O’Groats 2021 – Day 1: Land’s End to Penzance, 30k, 466m climbed

I had thought that the famous Land’s End signpost was a public thing that anyone could bowl up to and have their picture taken in front of. How naive! Turns out it’s a commercial operation, run by the same family since 1957. For a fee, they take a photo and let you put your own personal message up, which is a bit naff but if it helps raise the profile of my charity then it’s worth it.

Webbo, whom I first met on a hot hockey pitch in Bath in 1986, had driven down from Truro – with her entire family! – to toast me with Kiwi cocktail and see me off. She also insisted on paying the photographer’s fee (just as well, as I might not have had a ‘start’ photo at all if it was down to me). Thanks guys.

So here goes…

I’m back in Penzance tonight – thank you to Lucy and Justin for putting me up. Though next time I cycle here, could you please arrange a chair lift or similar up the final hill?
